Despite being the most forested state in the US, Maine boasts a surprising second superlative: having more roads per person than any other state. This leads to surprising interactions between Maine's wildlife and our roadways. Roadways can attract snakes and turtles, deter predators and secretive birds, and serve as highways for vultures, moose, and other species to move between habitats. This talk will discuss the complex nature of road ecology, spanning a variety of species, habitats, and locations in Maine - from our wilderness areas to our downtowns.

Who is Beginning with Habitat (BwH), and how does our program support communities with their comprehensive planning process? Join us to learn how to use BwH tools and services for effective decision making and planning in your own home town. This lunch and learn webinar will be divided into two parts. In the first half of the session, we will introduce our program and share tools and services designed for municipalities. In the second part of the webinar, we will reserve time for Q&A. We want to hear from you and learn about your questions and needs.

Corinne Michaud-LeBlanc, Climate Coordinator for Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife's Beginning with Habitat program will provide an overview of conservation planning tools and strategies for a changing climate, and suggestions for how to use them. This presentation will highlight salt marsh ecosystems and salt marsh sparrows. Pete Slovinsky, Marine Geologist with Maine Geological Survey, will discuss how climate change is impacting vulnerable dune habitat in the state, and recommend conservation actions for communities with this habitat.

These virtual Casco Bay Coastal Academy (CBCA) workshops are brought to you by Casco Bay Estuary Partnership, Maine Sea Grant, and R1CC. CBCA aims to build the knowledge base of municipal board members and staff about critical coastal issues and provide skills training to support their project planning and implementation. The workshops are especially targeted to municipal staff, volunteer committee members, community leaders, and organizations providing services to municipalities. Everyone is welcome!
